Introduction to Business

This course provides students with a fun and engaging introduction to the fundamentals of business operation and strategy. During the first segment of the course students will be introduced to the core business disciplines including strategy, marketing, innovation, finance and economics. Students will then apply these ideas by using the case-study method to analyze real companies. Afternoon activities and visits to real companies in the Bay Area will supplement this portion of the course. In the second course segment students will learn about different approaches to business strategy. Student teams will then apply this knowledge to the simulation of their own manufacturing operation. Teams will compete to create the operation with the most shareholder value. Throughout the course students will have many opportunities to present and improve communication skills as well as to develop an understanding of fundamental business topics.

Session 1 (June 22 - July 11)

Age and grade requirements: 9th or 10th grade in Spring 2008, and age 14 - 16 on June 22, 2008.

Investigations in Business

This course offers students the opportunity to develop a rich understanding of core business topics. During the first course segment students will learn the fundamentals of business including marketing, operations, product development, economics and accounting. Students will then apply these concepts to analyze real companies using the case-study method. Afternoon activities and visits to real companies in the Bay Area will supplement this portion of the course. In the second course segment students will learn about different approaches to business strategy. Student teams will then apply this knowledge to the simulation of their own manufacturing operation. Teams will compete to create the operation with the most shareholder value. In the third segment, students will learn about the principles of innovation and entrepreneurship. Teams of students will then work together to integrate all of the concepts that they have learned in order to develop a preliminary business plan. Throughout the course students will have many opportunities to present and improve communication skills as well as to develop an in-depth understanding of fundamental business topics

Session 2E (July 14 - August 9)

Age and grade requirements: 10th or 11th grade in Spring 2008, and age 15 - 17 on July 14, 2008.
