2004 Summer Institutes Courses

Music Courses

Music Theory

Session One (June 20 - July 9), ages 14-16

This course is for students who have been playing an instrument for several years but who have not undertaken the formal study of music theory. A program in rhythm, melody, and harmony will engage the students in the application of music theory through real instrument study as well as computer (MIDI) applications and use of notation programs. The fundamentals (pitch, scales, intervals, dictation, key signatures, ear training) will be incorporated into more advanced exercises in harmony: triads, harmonic progression, Roman numeral succession of scale degrees, melody and harmonization on a given part, advanced chord structures, and modulation. The course will include harmonic analysis using traditional musical forms as well as popular music and original compositions, and rhythm and ear training, including dictation and performance. Students will be encouraged to apply their knowledge and skill in theory through composition exercises throughout the course, culminating in the performance of student compositions.

Prerequisites: Students must show proficiency on a musical instrument as well as a basic understanding of music fundamentals. Students should bring their own instruments. Piano and computer access will be available.
