EPGY Summer Institutes 2004

The EPGY Summer Institutes at Stanford University are two or three-week and four-week residential summer programs for students ages 13 through 17. These programs allow students to join peers who share their abilities and interests in an academic and social environment conducive to intellectual stimulation and development.

The program is designed for highly motivated students who want to enrich and accelerate their academic pursuits. Students will explore the subject areas in depth, and they will be presented with challenging material beyond what is typically offered in middle school and high school.

The Summer Institutes are self-contained courses that can be taken independently of the ordinary EPGY computer-based courses. (For a list of these distance-learning courses, which are available year round, see the Course Catalog)

Application Process

Download and print the application packet, then mail the completed packet to EPGY Hong Kong Adminstrative Center. (This is a PDF file, for which you need Acrobat.)

Application Deadlines

The rolling admissions process will begin on January 31, 2004. The application fee is HK$280.  Applications will be reviewed every three weeks until all courses are full.

Selection

Enrollment in all sessions is limited. Students are selected based on their grades, their performance on standardized exams, their teacher recommendations, samples of their work, and their reasons for wanting to come to the Institute as expressed in the free response questions on the application form.

Tuition and Lab Fees

Tuition for the EPGY Summer Institutes is US$2495 for the two week course, US$3100 for the three week courses and US$4000 for the four week courses. This cost will cover room and board in university housing, course materials, field trips and transportation to and from the San Francisco Airport.

Instructors

“The teacher is the most intelligent I’ve ever worked with.”

The EPGY Summer Institutes are instructed by highly qualified members of the EPGY instructional staff, who are experts in the subject areas that they are teaching. The regular instruction may be supplemented with guest lectures and special projects. The residential staff is primarily Stanford undergraduate and graduate students who are studying the subject areas in our course offerings. Most of the residential staff will be involved in instruction so that the academic portion of the program is fully integrated with the social components of the Summer Institutes. Additional teaching assistants will provide instructional support on a drop-in basis. There will be approximately a one-to-seven ratio of residential staff to students in each session, with an overall ratio of one-to-four instructional staff to students.

Housing

The EPGY Summer Institutes are housed in residences that are used by Stanford undergraduates during the regular school year. During the EPGY Summer Institutes, approximately 40 students and 6 residential staff members will occupy each residence. Students in the same Summer Institute course will be housed together, and each residence will house two courses of about twenty students each. Rooms for boys and girls are on separate floors, or in separate parts of the residence.

Dining

Students will eat in dining halls that are separate from their residence. The dining halls serve a range of options, cafeteria style, for each meal, every day. Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated; students accepted into the program will be asked to provide information on dietary restrictions.

Activities

“Be prepared to work really hard and have lots of fun!”

In addition to the academic program there will be organized sports activities, field trips, a variety of games, and other social activities. Students will have the opportunity to explore the Stanford campus and surrounding areas, and make use of some of the campus facilities.
