InfoKids Multimedia Literacy Program (IML)
(This program is based on the SWRL Beginning Reading Program, USA developed through the culmination of
extensive research and classroom use involving more than 100,000 children of different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Most educators and linguists today advocate...

Students make great strides toward
reading proficiency

through a combination of
the whole language approach
and
direct phonics instruction.

The human mind
remembers 80%
of what is seen,
heard & acted upon.

(Compare this to
20% of what is heard,
as in ordinary English classes.)

Children learn best
when they can
proceed
at their own pace,
feel successful,
and
feel in control of
their learning experience.

IML Program is the most effective because it integrates...

The Latest
Methodology

the Whole Language/
Phonics Combination

IML Program incorporates
different activity components -
word recognition, phonics,

and

carefully leveled stories
(both online and in print) -
making it the most
complete and effective.

Multimedia Computer
Technology and
Multi-sensory Activities

the visual, auditory &
kinaesthetic learning styles

IML Program's online activities
present enjoyable learning
experiences through
graphics, animation, sound & color.

Its offline activities
present action-oriented,
multi-sensory opportunities
for students to
reinforce and extend their learning.

Individuality
and
Cooperativeness

Self-paced Practice and
Cooperative Learning

IML Program provides
self-paced practice
helping students build
self-esteem & feelings of success.

Through songs, dramatic play, rhyming games, story-recording and
interactions with their peers & the computers, children become
active learners instead of passive
listeners as in ordinary English classes.

Module 1: Phonics (for children aged 4-12)
Module 2: Grammar and Advanced Phonics (for children aged 6 and above)

Module 3: Comprehension & Writing (for children aged 8 and above)

The course concentrates not only on the basic skills  (vocabulary & comprehension) needed for success in reading, but also on higher-level critical thinking skills. The course makes use of books (both digital and printed), starting with 300 basic vocabulary words to advanced levels with over 1600 vocabulary words.  The course also makes extensive use of CDs, and the Internet in elaborating themes in stories and building vocabulary.  Students learn to discuss and understand:

l         story character rules

l         sequencing

l         main idea

l         story prediction and retelling

l         relating personal knowledge & experience to literature

l         difference between fiction and non-fiction

The course teaches the elements essential for good writing - Organization, Development, Clarity and Editing.  Topics include:  sentence structure, topic webs, topic and supporting sentences, similes, metaphors and personification. While stressing the fundamentals of sentence building, the program uses the process approach to writing paragraphs and short stories to improve writing and editing skills.

To reinforce and extend students’ reading and writing skills, there would be worksheets and assignments that students complete off-line and submit electronically to instructors for evaluation.
