EPGY Admissions Policy

EPGY Admissions at InfoKids

InfoKids admits precollege students of all nationalities and grade levels residing in Hong Kong into the Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY). Admission to EPGY is handled on a rolling basis; applications are accepted at all times of the year and decisions are generally made within two weeks of receipt of application materials and sitting the EPGY Aptitude Test. Once admitted, students meeting the registration deadlines may begin courses on prescribed dates. Applications must be received in our office at least one month prior to the planned course starting date to ensure the timely arrival of registration materials.

Program Admissions

To be admitted into either the English or the Mathematics/Physics program, students must submit the documents listed below for their age category. All standardized tests must have been taken within two years of the date of the application. Achievement and aptitude tests other than those specifically listed below may be accepted as qualifying tests pending approval of the EPGY Admissions Committee. (For a guide to the abbreviations used here for the names of standardized tests, see the table at the end of this document.)

Once admitted, students are free to register for any course in that program, subject to the prerequisites of each course or consent of the instructor. Students admitted to one program only will be given the opportunity to take courses in the other program upon request, although submission of additional documentation may be required in some cases.

English Program

The following materials are required for admission to the English program:

Students age 9 or younger Admission is granted for this age group into the writing program only in rare cases, by special consent of the instructor. The student must also submit the materials listed below for students age 10-12.
Students age 10-12 A 1-2 page typewritten expository composition, written by the student; a score report from any of the following tests: CAT-5, CTBS/4, CTP-III, ITBS, MAT-7, OLSAT, PLUS, SAT-8, SAT-9. Students who have not taken standardized tests within two years may submit the writing sample only; in such cases, EPGY may require that further data be submitted.
Students age 13-14 A 3-4 page typewritten expository composition, written by the student; a score report from any of the following tests: CAT-5, CTBS/4, CTP-III, ITBS, MAT-7, OLSAT, PLUS, PSAT, SAT, SAT-8, SAT-9.
Students age 15 and above A 5+ page typewritten expository composition, written by the student; a score report from the PSAT or SAT.

Mathematics/Physics Program

The following materials will be required for students to be admitted to the Mathematics/Physics program:

Students age 6 or younger The EPGY Mathematical Aptitude Test; if available, a psychologist's evaluation from any of the following tests: Stanford-Binet, WISC, WPPSI-R, or Woodcock-Johnson.
Students age 7-8 The EPGY Mathematical Aptitude Test; if available, a score report or psychologist's evaluation from any of the following tests: CAT-5, CTBS/4, CTP-III, ERB, ITBS, MAT-7, OLSAT, PLUS, SAT-8, SAT-9, WISC, or Woodcock-Johnson.
Students age 9-12The EPGY Mathematical Aptitude Test; if available, a score report or psychologist's evaluation from any of the following tests: CAT-5, CTBS/4, CTP-III, ERB, ITBS, MAT-7, OLSAT, PLUS, SAT-8, SAT-9, WISC, or Woodcock-Johnson.
Students age 13-14 A score report from either the PSAT or SAT, or the EPGY Mathematical Aptitude Test; if available, a score report from any of the following tests: CAT-5, CTBS/4, CTP-III, ERB, ITBS, MAT-7, OLSAT, PLUS, SAT-8, SAT-9.
Students age 15 and above A score report from either the PSAT or SAT.

Additionally, students applying to advanced AP and university-level courses in mathematics may submit the results of the AB or BC Calculus, or Physics B or C AP tests, or equally relevant material for admission to the program.

Course Prerequisites

Students are normally required to present evidence that they have fulfilled the following requirements before registering for these courses:

M00A - M042 Primary and Secondary Mathematics Completion of prior course in sequence or equivalent, or through placement exam.
M043 Linear Algebra Completion of M042 or equivalent.
M044 Multivariate Calculus Completion of M042 or equivalent.
M045 Differential Equations Completion of M042 or equivalent.
M152 Elementary Number Theory Completion of M013 or equivalent.
M157 University Logic Completion of M013 or equivalent.
P10A Introductory Physics Completion or concurrent enrollment in M011 or equivalent.
P051 Mechanics Completion or concurrent enrollment in M040 or equivalent.
P053 Electricity & Magnetism Completion or concurrent enrollment in M041 or equivalent; completion of P051 or equivalent.
P55A Optics Completion or concurrent enrollment in M041 or equivalent; completion of P053 or equivalent.
P55B Thermodynamics Completion or concurrent enrollment in M041 or equivalent; completion of P051 or equivalent.
P070 Modern Physics Completion or concurrent enrollment in M042 or equivalent; completion of P55A, P55B or equivalent.
W009 Elementary Writing A 1-2 page typewritten expository prose composition, written by the student.
W010 Intermediate Writing A 2-3 page typewritten expository prose composition, written by the student, or completion of W009.
W011 Fundamentals of Expository Writing A 3-4 page typewritten expository prose composition, written by the student, or completion of W010.
E001 English Language and Composition A 5+ page typewritten expository prose composition, written by the student.
C11A-C Introduction to the C Programming Language Completion or concurrent enrollment in M011 or equivalent.

Students with evidence of unusual ability with respect to the general EPGY class of students may not be required to fulfill these prerequisites. Such students should present this evidence at the time of course registration.
