The EPGY Fundamentals of Expository Writing course is designed to give students a solid foundation in essay writing, literary analysis, and critical reading skills. Critical reading of the play Julius Caesar forms the centerpiece of the sequence. Each quarter may be taken as a separate course. Placement into these courses is based on submission of student writing samples. The courses lead directly into the E001 Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Sequence.

Lectures

The course is divided into several lessons, where new concepts are introduced through lectures presented as graphics accompanied by digitized sound. During or after each lecture, students are given questions and short weekly assignments that complement and extend the concepts covered in the lecture. These assignments are turned in each week to the course instructor.

Virtual Classroom Sessions

Students meet with instructors both as a group and individually to receive further writing instruction. Virtual Classroom sessions form an integral part of the course by allowing synchronous discussion of questions and ideas. Students and instructors view a common whiteboard display and speak to each other using Internet video and audio feeds.

Essay Critique and Revision

Tutors also provide detailed comments on weekly student exercises, and may require students to go through multiple revisions of a single essay. Students receive the tutor's comments electronically.
