The Intermediate Writing Course is intended as a preparation for
the W011 course. As such, topics covered in this course include
persuasive and argumentative essay composition, critical reading,
and literary analysis. In the first quarter, students will read
poems, short stories, and narrative essays. In the second
quarter, students will read The Crucible by Arthur Miller as well
as historical non-fiction and editorials. In the third quarter,
students review both literary essays and short stories. Course
lectures and virtual classroom sessions will focus on cause and
effect analysis as well as the study of the components of
argumentation. Admission and placement in the intermediate
writing sequence depends on a review of student writing samples.
Lectures
Each week, students review the current lecture on the EPGY web site. Students will use
their password to gain access to all course lectures. During the lecture,
students receive instructions about their weekly writing assignments in Common Space.
Weekly Assignments
Students review weekly lectures and complete weekly written assignments that
accompany each lecture. After completing the written work, the
students e-mail the assignment to their instructor.
Common Space
The Intermediate Writing Course uses a word processing program, Common Space,
which enables students to e-mail their weekly assignments to their instructor in a format
convenient for extensive commentary by the instructor.
The instructor uses Common Space to comment on the student’s weekly assignments and
essays. The instructor returns the written assignments by e-mail.
Virtual Classroom Sessions
Students meet in the virtual classroom for one hour each week to interact with classmates
to reinforce concepts from the lectures and to receive further instruction in expository
writing. Students are also welcome to use the classroom to work with their peers in off
hours.
Individual Tutorials
When students need individual assistance, they may contact their tutor to set up a private
15-20 minute tutorial session. The instructor may call for an individual tutorial at his or
her discretion.
